When you're planning for a high-volume sales event, like a product drop, campaign, or seasonal promotion, it's important to prepare your Shopify <> ShipHero connection for the traffic surge. Shopify limits the number of API calls that can be made during a given period, which can lead to delays or sync issues if those limits are exceeded. Below details how to proactively prepare to ensure your orders flow smoothly to Manifest for fulfillment.
Why This Matters
Shopify sets API call limits based on your plan and historical volume. During heavy traffic, like a big drop or flash sale, too many requests (from inventory updates, order imports, and app connections) can result in throttling or failed syncs. This can delay orders appearing in Manifest or cause inventory sync issues.
Best Practices Before a Drop or High-Volume Campaign
1. Coordinate With Shopify Support
Before your drop, reach out to Shopify to notify them of the expected spike in traffic. In many cases, they can temporarily increase your API call limits or provide guidance specific to your store setup. Be sure to mention that you’re using apps like ShipHero to help them understand the data flow.
2. Set Clear Shipping Expectations on Your Site
Update your product pages and checkout with clear processing and delivery timeframes, especially if you’re pre-selling or expecting extended fulfillment times. This will reduce pressure on your support team and build trust with your customers.
💬 Example: “Due to high demand, please allow up to 5 business days for order processing.”
3. Temporarily Disable Inventory Sync
To minimize strain on Shopify’s API, we recommend disabling inventory sync from Manifest back to Shopify during high-volume events. This prevents unnecessary API calls from real-time stock adjustments, especially if your inventory is fast-moving.
You can disable inventory sync across your entire Store by:
- Go to Stores and then select the 3 dots next to the store you'd like to turn the sync off for
- Then select Settings
- In the pop-up unselect "Push Inventor numbers from Portal to your store"
⚠️ Important: Once the campaign ends, don’t forget to re-enable inventory sync so stock levels between Shopify and Manifest resync properly.
What to Expect During the Spike
- Orders may take a few extra minutes to sync, especially when large batches are being placed.
- Inventory updates may be delayed if not disabled.
- If you anticipate thousands of orders, notify your Manifest Account Manager so we can prepare operations accordingly.
